What is a tandem paragliding flight in Interlaken?

You fly strapped to a licensed pilot, who does the flying, for 10 to 20 minutes.

Two people under one paraglider wing in front of a snow-covered mountain face near Grindelwald, July 2015.

A bus takes you about 20 minutes up to Beatenberg, at 1,350 m. You run a few steps on the meadow with your pilot until the wing lifts you. You come down about 800 m and land in Höhematte Park, in the centre of town.

You need no experience, and you can ask for a gentle flight or a more adventurous one. From Interlaken, allow at least an hour and a half in all.

4 operators sell this flight on GetYourGuide, all from €196. What differs is the weight they accept at each hour, where you meet them and what they include.

The four flights from Beatenberg, side by sideEvery paragliding flight on GetYourGuide

When is the best time to paraglide in Interlaken?

All year, weather permitting. The tourist office says the thermals are best around midday.

  • The season

Flights from Interlaken run throughout the year, and those from Mürren too, except when it rains.

  • The hour

Three operators set their lowest weight limit on the early or late flights, so a heavier passenger has fewer hours to choose from.

  • The weather

The operator decides, often late. Skywings says its final decision usually comes close to the flight; Noahinair sends a text by 21:00 the evening before.

How does a flight go, and how long does it take?

About an hour and a half from Interlaken, with 10 to 20 minutes in the air.

Paraglider pilots launching their wings from a grass slope at Kleine Scheidegg, with cloud behind.
  1. Meet

At a train station or another meeting point, which you choose when you book.

  2. Ride up

About 20 minutes to Beatenberg, with first instructions on the way.

  3. Take off

The pilot straps you in, and you run a few steps on the meadow together.

  4. Land

On the Höhematte, in the centre of Interlaken. You can buy the photos from the pilot.

Who can fly, and what is the weight limit?

Most flights stop between 90 and 100 kg, and one at Mürren goes up to 115 kg.

  • Weight

From 80 kg on some slots to 115 kg, depending on the operator and the hour. See every limit, hour by hour.

  • Age

From 5 on several flights. The tourist office says six, so the offers and the office differ.

  • Health

Several operators rule out pregnancy, heart problems or epilepsy. Each flight lists its own under “Compare in detail”.

  • Running

You run a few steps at take-off. Sky4All's flight for wheelchair users does without them.

What should you settle before booking?

Your weight, your slot, and what happens if the weather turns.

The valley floor at Rütti near Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley, with a road, barns and cloud-capped peaks, May 2014.
  • Weight and slot

Limits change with the hour, so read them for the slot you pick. Over 90 kg, choose the operator first and the hour second.

  • Weather

Every flight here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. If the operator cancels, read that flight's own rule: a day trip from Geneva only refunds the flight part.

  • Insurance

Liability insurance only pays if the pilot made a mistake. Otherwise your own accident insurance applies, and foreign passengers often have too little. Check yours.

Can you do it as a day trip from Zurich or Geneva?

Yes: trains reach Interlaken every half hour from both, and two day trips include the flight.

By train you book any of the flights above yourself. From any major Swiss town, a train leaves for Interlaken at least once an hour.

A day trip from Zurich with the flight takes 10 h and costs from €328. A day trip from Geneva with the flight takes 13 h and costs from €371.

Is paragliding in Interlaken worth it?

That's yours to weigh: from €196 for 10 to 20 minutes in the air, with the lake and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in view.

How much does paragliding cost in Interlaken?

From €196 from Beatenberg and from €207 from Mürren. Photos and video are usually extra: 40 CHF where the operator gives a price.

Every price
Is paragliding in Interlaken safe?

We give no accident figure, because we found no solid source for one. Swiss law requires an official licence for tandem pilots and at least five million francs of passenger liability cover on commercial flights.

What the law requires
Do you need any experience?

No. A tandem flight needs no previous experience, and the pilot flies.

What should you wear?

Sports clothes and proper footwear. Some operators lend boots, and several ask you to bring a jacket.

What to wear
Can you take your phone?

It depends on the operator. Airtime does not allow phones or selfie sticks. AlpinAir accepts a pocket camera only with a safety leash.

Can you paraglide from Grindelwald?

Not on a flight we can compare: none of the flights on GetYourGuide's lists left from Grindelwald when we read them. The nearest we compare leave from Beatenberg and Mürren.

Where to start?

Check your weight, then pick your flight.
